I’d agree with that order for essentially the most element.Excellent write-up.Thanks for sharing this informative post.
Wow…that’s all I’ve to say…WOW! This was excellent. I am learning the best way to be successful in this new world, and really do a thing of value. Fantastic Stuff! Maintain them Coming!!!
Talk about a nice looking office space, I will take that office setup depicted in the photo. That is a very nice looking office. Call me overly efficient, but I do not agree nor would I ever buy heavy steel filing cabinets. This stems from my own personal preference to want to remain very mobile. I try to keep both my office and home packed in such a way that I can evacuate at a moment’s notice.
Thanks for a truly exceptional and an wonderful bit of info. Just 1 word. Amazing!!! and thanks for this gift of understanding!
When I first started to see where this article was going regarding steel file cabinets, the first thing that came to my mind was those heavy, ugly metal filing cabinets you see in a circa 1970′s police station. Those things are not only heavy, but flat out ugly. But as I continued reading, I realize that they do make stylish, steel finish cabinets that look modern and are worthy of any fancy executive office suite.
There is no doubt in my mind after owning a business that quality is important when purchasing furniture. As fate would have it, we ended up moving a couple of times, and one of the more inexpensive cabinets got dropped. The metal bent and the lock became inoperable. although we were able to straighten out the cabinet enough to make the lock work, it became a “backroom” cabinet due to the asthetic damage. You have a Great selection to choose from. I would also recommend not to skimp on chairs. Every “cheap” chair we had soon had the hydraulics leak, and had to be adjusted every 15 minutes or so just to maintain the proper working height. What a pain!
I was reading your blog the other day on the commercial safes and keeping documents and such safe from prying eyes and other things. After reading this blog on file cabinets and storage cabinets I can’t tell which would be the better fit. Do you prefer a safe or a file cabinet? I think a safe would have to be hidden behind something like a door or bookcase but everyone expects to see file cabinets.
You were talking about the colors that you can find these file cabinets in and I was wondering what colors there are besides the original black, white, almond and gray? My office is going to be very colorful when I get it finished and I am looking for file cabinets that are a red or deep purple, have you seen any of that color? Would something like that have to be ordered special?
I personally like the idea of steal file cabinets because of the fire protection and the protection against bugs and things that they offer. If they are caught in a flood the documents are still going to get wet and the cabinet stands a good possibility of rusting therefore in that case I think I would want my more important stuff locked up in a safe made for office use.
After reading this article, I was somewhat anticipating discovering some real stylish filing cabinets – real contemporary styled office cabinets. But after following the embedded link and surfing through the inventory, I must admit, I was a bit disappointed to find very ordinary looking filing cabinets. The closest thing I could find to what I had imagined, was the MOF Godrej Low Steel Sliding Storage Cabinet. Though the color makes it look like it is made of wood.
I was wondering are there any safes that have file accommodations? I like the idea of being able to lock it up in a safe but I need something to hold files as well. You were mentioning that there were various shapes as well as sizes, what shape can a file cabinet come in besides rectangular, either tall or long? I have to admit I really like the idea of the different colors though.
This was a very interesting blog I was comparing it to the commercial safe idea and I am not sure which one I think will be the best idea. A safe by any stretch of the means would be harder to get in then a file cabinet but the file cabinets come in multiple colors and they are considerably cheaper. Safes are also fire proof, are most file cabinets? File cabinets also rust.
Do you know of a store that carries a multitude of colors in file cabinets or is it something that you have to order out of an office supply catalog? I am looking for green to match my office and I have yet to find anything like that. All of the cabinets I have found are cheap thin aluminum steal mix but I want something more sturdy. Are there cabinets that are a heavier steal?
Is it possible to get metal filing cabinets and bookcases that will match a more modern desk? I have had a hard time finding metal that will match the wooden desk that I bought. I guess a lot of the more modern furniture though is metal and glass so I kind of answered my own question. I enjoyed your blog though and this has definitely made me think about what I will use.
It would be very important in our office to have file cabinets on wheels. We are going to have to get the big four drawer lateral files and they will be loaded down pretty heavy, I know that they make the smaller ones with wheels but do they put wheels on these big ones? I was wondering because if they are loaded down heavy enough would the wheels break?
I am not a lawyer, so I can only suspect that it is people who work in law or who facilitate real estate or automobile transactions have a need for filing cabinets because of the fact that the deal very often with legal contracts. But even paper contracts are slowly going by the wayside as there are new services which make it possible to sign contracts in digital format. I have even seen services that use fingerprint scanning technology.
I couldn’t help but admre all of the photos of contemporary offices. These are some of the most impressive and stylish office spaces I have ever seen. I don’t think I have ever stepped foot into an office that personified pure wealth, success and opulence. Even the work stations for employees are fancier than any I have ever seen. I wish I could furnish a photo studio like this. If the prices are not too high, maybe I can.

I am not necessarily a fan of large wooden work stations or desks. For me, efficiency of space and mobility are my primary concerns. I prefer a plastic or glass desk over the heavier wooden structure. I just happen to prefer to be prepared for the inevitable move. I mean, no one has ever stayed in business at the same location forever. You will eventually move to a larger facility or move the furniture out for a going out of business sale.
Unlike wood, steel steel cabinets dont buckle down with scratches, stains and moisture. Some steel units can even withstand impact and rough, consistent use. Steel file cabinet can stand the test of time and you may never need to get a new unit for years to come. Another advantage to steel units is that they typically carry an array of special features. These include single lock, interlock system, nylon rollers, full drawer suspension, counterweight and more. That’s what I find most ideal.
I really like the fact that the file cabinets come with multiple types of locks on them now. When they were just a key lock they were easy to get into. I hope the steel they are made out of now is stronger and more sturdy then it uses to be as well because you could bend it and get into it that way as well. You did a great job with your blog.
I found something comparable to what is offered on this site. 36″ Wide Lateral File Cabinets, Four Drawers. I Ordered these filing cabinets for a law office. These filing cabinets are great. They’re attractive and work well. The drawers pull out nice and easy, and the filing cabinets are also stable. But there is something missing in terms of style. What I bought looks too plain, like a metal file cabinet. I like the ones on this site much better.
This was a very interesting blog and you had some very good advice when it comes to file cabinets. I also have enjoyed your blogs on desks, bookcases and chairs. You obviously know what you are talking about when it comes to office furniture and you have done a great job on all of your blogs. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us.
Do they make plastic file cabinets? I have had the wooden ones and they splinter, I have had steel file cabinets and they get all rusted and bent up. So I thought I should try plastic if they make such a thing. Any information you have on the subject would be much appreciated. I got this idea from another one of your blogs so I figured you might have some information.
You have had a blog that covers book cases, safes, file cabinets, desks and chairs, do you have any idea when you will post one on credenzas? I have been looking for one for my office and through my research I am not finding out much information so I thought maybe you could help me. Thank you for all your blogs and the information you have shared with us.
I absolutely love the picture that is on your blog with the green furniture, where can I get this furniture? Does it come in other colors as well like purple? I run a boutique and it is made up of mostly lavender decorations so you can see why I would want purple. You had some really great information on all of your blogs so far and I look forward to your next one.
You certainly sound like you know a lot about office furniture, I have read all of your blogs. Do you happen to own an office furniture store? That is the only way I could imagine that someone would have so much advice about office furniture at all. You have done a great job please keep up the good work, I can’t wait.
I have a need for a lot of file cabinets in my business to you have any units that you know of that brings them altogether in one place in a fashion that looks professional? I was thinking something along the lines of folding doors in front of the cabinets to kind of hide them. Any ideas that could help me.
I agree with the durability of the steel file cabinets but I do not like the looks of most of them. I would really prefer the look of wood but I don’t want the weight of wood. Is there anything that you can suggest? I noticed with all of the environmental stuff going on that plastic file cabinets are not manufactured. Will you be posting anymore information later on?
Thank you for all the information you have provided, this was a great blog and you have a lot of great tips and tricks included. You take your office furniture seriously and you can tell. Are you by chance a decorator? I have some furniture that I have designed and I am looking for someone to make it for me do you know who I could contact for this purpose?

I was looking for a certain shape in file cabinets and I haven’t been able to find them. I was wondering where you can get an oval shaped file cabinet, I saw one in a picture but I haven’t been able to find one. Have you ever heard of this? I would also like to have it in Purple if possible. I know I don’t ask for much do I? Please reply to this comment.
You have a great blog here and I have seen your others as well about the desks and the bookcases etc. and the executive furniture. You did a great job with all of them and I can’t wait to see your next one. You made some very good points about how you should measure and the way the desk is the focal point in the center of an office. Great job putting this all together.
I remember some of those older file cabinets that were just blogs of metal in the corner of the room, they were very sturdy but they were just eye sores in the office so many people would try to keep them in another storage room or closet. Remember that army green that they came out in and then a drab gray, the colors today are so much better. Great job on your blog.
You mentioned that steel file cabinets are easy to clean and resistant to mites, bugs, moisture and fire, but if they are resistant to moisture how is it that they end up rusted so often? I have a few that I bought brand new and just the moisture in the office has caused them to rust over a period of time. Is there anything you can put on them that will prevent that?
The locks on the steel cabinets are by far better than they wooden ones that can easily break. And maintenance is low on steel file cabinets if you can figure out a way to stop the rust. I don’t think even with the colors available now that there are enough especially in the metallic colors. However I can understand the government offices using them because they do look military in color and they are durable.
This was very helpful information. You mentioned that a lot of steel file cabinets come with wheels on them so you can move them around easily when they are full and heavy, is that the case with the taller file cabinets too? Would the taller ones have a tendency to tip over if they were on wheels? Don’t get me wrong I really like the idea but I want it to be safe as well.
The digital locks on a file cabinet would be interesting I understand having a digital lock on a safe but I have to admit I have never seen that on a file cabinet. I like all the ideas and options available in file cabinets now days but I still prefer all of my documents be scanned into an electronic file cabinet. I understand that you still need to keep some in paper form though.
My father used to buy used furniture and he had some of those older file cabinets that were just blocks of metal , I remember thinking how ugly they were. They were very sturdy though, we could climb all over them and they didn’t dent or fall over. I remember that army green that they came out in and how much of an eye sore they were, the colors today are so much better.
Having a digital lock on your file cabinet sounds a bit extreme to me and a little more expensive then I would want to spend. I want something that I don’t have to remember another code for and I can get into fast when I need to. The locks on the steel cabinets are by far better than they used to be and they are stronger than the ones n the wooden cabinets.
I have a few of these file cabinets I bought brand new for my office and just the moisture in the office has caused them to rust. Is there anything you can put on them that will prevent that? Are they not painted with a rust resistant paint obviously? Would that help if you sprayed some of that on them or would you have to strip the paint that is on them off before hand?
I am all about electronic file cabinets these days so I prefer that everything be scanned. I understand that you still need to keep some in paper form though for tax purposes and things like audits but I think they are even coming around to the electronic age. How long do you think it will be before there are no more file cabinets needed?
You mentioned that a lot of steel file cabinets come with wheels on them so you can move them around easily when they are full and heavy, is that the case with the taller file cabinets too? I have never known a file cabinet that big to be on wheels, the smaller ones yes but not your four drawer laterals. Would the taller ones have a tendency to tip over if they were on wheels?
I like the idea of the executive cabinets in the office that you mentioned, are these steel as well? I think those would be really good if you had an inventory of office supplies to keep track of. And office bookshelves are a must especially if you are and executive, you need room to display your personal belongings to make it more comfortable for you.
If you have very little space in your office for file cabinets because of cubicles and such then I have found the best thing to do is get lateral file cabinets and line the walls around the office with them. Do lateral file cabinets also come with wheels on them? They are a little large and cumbersome so I didn’t know if something that large and heavy could be on wheels for safety sake.
Many offices consist of a bunch of cubicles these days that there isn’t a lot of room for file cabinets or book shelves and cabinets, unless you are an executive that has your own office. Most of the time the cubicles come with the desk unit and two drawer file cabinet for the desk, so If you need additional file cabinet space you have to find the right size for what little space you have.

I have seen some of the file cabinets that have digital locks on them and I have seen them malfunction and not open when you need them too, so even though they are convenient because there is no key to keep track of I would rather not have them because of the malfunctioning capabilities. If I need to get a file then I don’t want to have to break my file cabinet because it malfunctions.
Who could have imagined that there was so much involved with picking out a file cabinet? Your article was very interesting and you did a great job pointing out the different options available to us as far as color, size, shape, style, locks and much more. Thank you for sharing all of this information with us it will come in handy the next time I am buying a file cabinet.
Do lateral files come in different colors and designs as well as the regular file cabinets? I have found that we don’t have a lot of room in our office so we have lined the walls with lateral four drawer file cabinets. We would like to change the color of them and possibly put them on wheels if they are some that come with wheels, or are they to big for that?
So how does this work when you have offices that consist of a bunch of cubicles? The only thing that will fit in a cubicle is a two drawer cabinet under the desk (or two) and maybe one four drawer stand alone in the corner, but that is pushing it. But what if you measure your space and that won’t even work? I think this blog is mainly for the people with actual offices right?
What do you actually have to keep in paper files? I assume there are laws or stipulations for what you need to keep, but if you can scan this stuff and print it at will what would be the purpose. I am not trying to deter anyone from your filing cabinets I am just stating the facts. You have a great blog here and you did a great job putting it together.
This was a very good blog but I think the best way to go is still electronic file cabinets. The company I used to work for has gone through all of their paper files and scanned them into a data base that is backed up every thirty minutes and they are getting rid of the actual file cabinets. You have some great looking file cabinets though if you don’t have the electronic capability.
No offense to you or your blog because you have done a great job with it, but aren’t file cabinets a little outdated these days? With the computer systems the way they are is there really any need at all to have file cabinets in your offices anymore? I apologize for pointing this out but I feel this is the case now days. Thank you for posting this information, it’s still good advice for homeowners.
I run an antique shop so I would like to make my file cabinets look old or aged I guess is a better word for it. Can you antique a steel file cabinet or would it not work? Do they sell older file cabinets? Thank you for the article I know a lot of people don’t use file cabinets anymore but I use them for other things besides files.
You have a great blog and I have enjoyed all of your posts so far. Unfortunately I do not have file cabinets in my office because everything is done electronically. I do however have a few at home for tax papers and such so I will keep this article in mind when I am looking for some new ones. Mine are getting kind of old so it may not be long before I am.
All of your blogs have been very informative and I have learned a lot and taken a lot of advice from your blogs and put it to use in the company that I work for. I was wondering when you were going to post again and what it’ll be about this time? You do a great job with the information you are trying to get out there and I look forward to your next one.
So many people make these mistakes. Their eyes are telling them that their office is bigger than it really is and they always try to eyeball everything. What do you do with the extra office furniture when you get it back to your office and it doesn’t fit? Can you take it back? What if you bought it used to save some money? It is so easy to prevent these things from happening.
